Why Test a Microwave Oven for Leakage?

Employers have a “Duty of Care”, to ensure their workplace is safe, and suggest the testing of microwave ovens in the workplace annually as a minimum standard.

Radiation leakage from a microwave often occurs through the doors and seals, which is invisible to see. These harmful radiation leakages can cause harm to the health of the users. We test to ensure omitting Radiation levels are kept at a safe level, as set by the Radiation Health Committee

What could cause a Microwave Oven to leak is – slamming the door, dirt or food particles caught in the door seals and hinges, or basic wear and tear all cause the oven door to slightly separate from the oven enclosure. Once this happens, invisible, but highly dangerous microwaves leak through the small space and cause irreversible damage and injury to the user and you may be exposing yourself & staff to dangerous levels of radiation leakage
The Australian Standard states that exposure to sufficiently high levels of microwaves will cause heating, and in the case of human tissue, excessive heating could have serious health effects such as deep tissue burns and hypothermia.

How is Microwave Oven Testing Inspection carried out?

The Microwave Oven is inspected for any physical damage to ensure safety to comply with standard AS/NZS 60335.2.25 and a Radiation Leakage Inspection of the microwave using a Microwave Radiation Leakage Detector to measure & test to ensure that Radiation levels are below limits as specified in AS/NZS 60335.2.25.

What legislation applies?

AS/NZS 60335.2.25 have set guidelines for permissible levels of radiation leakage from microwave ovens used in a workplace or public place environment.
The National Health and Medical Research Council recognises that some microwave radiation may escape from ovens and has laid down a standard of safety for leakage radiation. It believes that compliance with this standard will ensure the public health is not affected by the use of microwave ovens.

This standard AS/NZS 60335.2.25 of safety, states that the microwave leakage power flux density of microwave radiation from any microwave oven, shall not exceed shall not exceed 50W/m2 (5mW/cm2) or more from the external surface of the oven.
